Ignition Interlock Device - Prevent Drunk Driving!

What is an "Ignition Interlock Device?"

An Ignition Interlock Device (IID) is installed into your cars dashboard and used mainly for those previously convicted of a drunk driving offense.  The IID has a mouthpiece attached to it that the driver of the vehicle must breath into to prove they have not been drinking.

The breathelizer test is immediate and if the driver passes will then be allowed to start the car and proceed with driving.  If the driver has a blood alcohol level typically above .04% the engine will not start.

What safety features are built into IID's?

Once the first test is passed and the engine is started the device will randomly alert the driver to breath into the mouthpiece.  This random testing stops people from breathing into a device when sober and then allowing a car to run.

If this random test fails the device will sound the horn and flash the headlights until the engine is turned off.

Which States are using these devices?

Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.
